Membership of the Congresses of the United States

This is a compilation of the membership of each Congress of the United States, organized by state and, in the case of House representatives, by district.  Territorial delegates are also noted.  Each member's name in each Congress is linked to the entry in the Biographical Dictionary of the United States Congress.  Additional notes on resignations, deaths, expulsions or other premature terminations of tenure are adapted from The Political Graveyard, from the online Biographical Dictionary of the United States Congress or its PDF version.

This listing is unique for being the first complete online assemblage of Congressional memberships.  The PDF version of the Biographical Dictionary of the United States Congress lists all Senators and Representatives by State and Congress through the 108th Congress, but for the first 30 or so Congresses, Representatives are listed in alphabetical order; thereafter the names appear in numerical order of their districts.  For the 1st Congress through the 30th Congress, single-member and plural-member districts were checked against Martis's Historical Atlas of United States Congressional Districts. 

Representation for each state - Senate and House - and territories has also been added in the form of a timeline.  House members are arranged by district, Senators by class.  Names in italics have additional notes.

This project has thus endeavored to be not only as complete as possible but also as accurate as possible.  Some errors may remain and will be corrected as they are noted.
